An apple a day may not keep a doctor away forever, but there are a lot of great health benefits of apples that your parents may or may have not discussed with you while telling you this catchy little phrase to get you to eat a balanced diet.
Everyone has heard the old adage, "an apple a day will keep the doctor away," but is there any merit to this catchy phrase?
As children we are taught that apples are a healthy substitute to non-healthy foods, such as chips and candy. There is a reason why parents push their children to eat as many apples as humanly possible. Why?
Kids are generally more active than adults. Active kids exploit more oxygen when they are engaged in their daily activities; apples support lung and heart health. Apples are also known to reduce the possibility of a child contracting asthma.
Every apple that you eat contains a substance that is known as flavanoids. Flavanoids are special to apples. When Flavanoids combine with antioxidants and fiber, you will be strengthening your body without even realizing it, whether you are a child or not. Apples can protect the human body against oxygen related problems.
Apples also contain a large amount of antioxidants which are needed to help the heart pump thousands of gallons of blood on a daily basis. If our hearts are unable to receive blood, we will lose oxygen and our ability to breathe. Most of the antioxidants that are found in apples are within the apple skin. It is important to not automatically peel the outer layer of the fruit off. When eating apple skin, organic is the way to go, if possible!
Side note: "Thank you heart!"
Just one Apple a day...
If you consume one apple per day, you can drastically reduce your risk of contracting certain types of cancers. Your risk of contracting lung cancer is lowered by eating one apple per day. Researchers are still looking into the effects of eating an apple to combat breast cancer and colon cancer. But, most people are speculating that if an apple can reduce the risk of lung cancer, then it may have some significance on reducing the risk of these other types of illnesses as well.
When shopping for apples, buy organic if possible. Pick out the most colorful ones you can find and check for firmness. Smaller hand held apples juice very easily, if you have a juicer with a large mouth feed tube. And lastly, shop at your local farmers market for the freshest apples in season.
Juicing Apples is such an easy way to enjoy the fruit and reap the rewards of great health!
